This straight shaper was developed with Albrecht Mayer. The straight shaper is specifically adapted to his requirements and playing style. It differs significantly in size from his “ALMA” shape and offers a number of technical advantages.
“This Straight Shaper is the result of my experience, the reeds close perfectly, respond well in depth and lie relaxed in the mouth. I remove the ears if the cane is too soft. Then the sound becomes a little darker. This results in very stable reeds that are a pleasure to play.”
One of the notable features of this Straight Shaper is its elongated shape, which allows for an easier and more precise shaping process. This design ensures a repeatable and even placement of the cane. In addition, the so-called “ears” of the shaped canes can be cut with a cutter knife. Musicians who are often on the road can easily carry this tool in their tool bag.
Details of Albrecht Mayer's reeds
Mayer uses cane with a diameter of 10.75 to 11.00 mm and a hardness of 10 to 13 for his reeds. After gouging with the Gouging Machine PASSIN, the cane reaches a thickness of 0.55 - 0.56 mm. He uses a 46 mm long Glotin staple and the blanks have a length of 73 mm. After cutting, the reeds have a length of about 72.5 mm. Mayer prefers to tie his reeds in such a way that only minimal shortening is required to achieve a comfortable opening.
Mayer uses the template #ALBI with a scrape length of approx. 9 - 10 mm.
