Small and Reliable
The Travel Mandrel will accept all oboe reeds, as there is no actual mandrel to have to match with different staple styles. The lack of a longer mandrel will also make getting through airport security with this tool much easier.
The metal sleeve, similar to the ones used on actual oboes, provides a solid grip on the reed while simulaneously protecting the wood of the handle and ensuring that the opening stays the same size over the years.
Our new travel mandrel for oboe fits together perfectly with our Tools To Go collection. This smaller handle is designed for musicians who travel a lot, have smaller hands, or are just looking for a smaller handle on their reed making tools. It offers space savings while still providing enough handle to have a solid grip on the tool.
Yes. The metal sleeve is 18 mm deep, so you can always add this to the measurement taken from the top of the insert.
Can I really use any staple with this mandrel? The metal sleeve is the exact same as the ones used on actual oboes. As long as the staple fits into an oboe, it will fit into this mandrel.
Why does it have a metal insert? The metal sleeve protects the wood of the handle. Inserting and removing reeds over and over again would wear out the wooden handle. By using the same metal sleeves used in oboes we ensure that the opening will remain the same size over many years.
