The Reeds 'n Stuff Reed Guillotine is designed such that the blades are perpendicular to the reed, ensuring that both blades are cut to the same length.
The blades are designed to last for hundreds of reeds. After many years of use, should the blades become too dull to use they can be replaced fairly simply.
Reeds up to a width of 22 mm can be cut using the Reed Guillotine. Reeds should be soaked in water before clipping.
If you wish to cut only a sliver off the tip of the reed, this can be viewed from the windows below and to the sides of the blades.
Using the Reed Guillotine
First, make sure the blades of the Reed Guillotine are open and there is enough space between them for the reed to fit. Soak the reed for at least one minute in warm water.
Pull the block holding the mandrel towards the open end of the Reed Guillotine. If it has hard to move, press down on the block. This will push the sides way from the walls holding the block down and allowing the block to move on the ball bearing underneath.
Place the reed on the mandrel, then slide the block back forward, towards the blades. The ruler on the base of the Reed Guillotine can be used to measure the blade length. Note: due to the height difference, be sure to read the length from directly above or from the side to ensure you are measuring accurately.
Once the reed is at the desired position, push down on the lever, cutting off the tip of the reed. Now you can slide the block back again and gently remove the reed from the mandrel.
Maintaining your Reed Guillotine
After each use it is recommended to clean any debris and cane dust from the Reed Guillotine. This can be accomplished with a strong push of air, or by using a brush.
After processing a larger amound of reeds we recommend placing two drops of oil into the bristles of a paint prush and then brushing the blades. This not only helps remove smaller debris, but also coats the blades in a thin protective coat of oil. This will help protect the blades from rust and discoloration.

FAQ
You can remove the tarnish with metal polish.
The reason why we use a steel that creates a patina over use is a technical one. The cutting abilities of such a steel are better than those of stainless steels.
You can check the cut by trying to cut a piece of cigarette paper. If the blade does the job then there is no need to exchange them. If they do not, it can be for two reasons:
1. The blade is really blunt. Then an exchange of blades would be good.
2. The 4 screws that hold the front blade are too loose. Tighten them just enough the cutting blade can be moved tight up and down.
